Steve Chell’s mixed media mirrors and Jackie Gardener’s paper-on-wood collage pieces will be featured at the Edgewater Gallery in Fort Bragg during August, with an opening presentation set for First Friday, August 5, 5-8 p.m.Edgewater will present its regular wine and cheese refreshments for the First Friday celebration at the gallery, located at 356 N. Main St. near Laurel.
Chell’s one-of-a-kind “reflektions” mirrors feature strips of flame-treated copper, metal wire, textured glass, and other striking materials, along with bronze, gray and copper mirror, in contemporary designs that enhance any décor. They range in size from 8”X10” to 28”X72”. In addition, he will debut his “abstraktions” photographs that highlight colors, shapes, patterns, and textures. Many of his photos are used as colorful accents under the textured glass strips on his mirrors. Chell is in his second year as a member of the artist-owned gallery.
Gardener is the gallery’s “Edgewater Welcomes …” guest artist for August. Well-represented in coastal galleries, Gardener began her paper art by creating handmade books. She focused on using paper in new ways, creating origami boxes, upholstering small cabinets and bread boxes, and developing her own tightly balanced style of collage with three dimensional “word monuments.” Gardener earns praise for her attention to detail and precision workmanship in carefully blending myriad papers into harmonious and complex structures. Gardener hand paints many of her papers. Many of her recent redwood block structures have been shaped in house forms; others are clever wordplay items for wall display.Edgewater was founded in 2003 and has nearly 20 full-time and guest members who offer a variety of artistic mediums, from jewelry and ceramics to oils, photography, and sculpture.
